DEBATE BETWEEN 4TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT SEAT CANDIDATES
GERALD H. BOYLE AND GWEN MOORE
MILWAUKEE, WI (October 19, 2004) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Society of Professional Journalists and the Broadcasting Club announced today that they are hosting a political debate entitled "It's Your Vote 2004" between 4th Congressional District candidates Republican Gerald H. Boyle and state Sen. Gwen Moore (D-Milwaukee) Friday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. The debate will be held in Cunningham Hall, Room B100, located at 1921 E. Hartford Avenue. Mike Miller of WISN 12 NEWS will be moderating and four other panelists will be asking additional key questions throughout the debate.
Moore is a Racine native who holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Marquette University and is a member of the National Black Caucus of State Legislature. Moore has been a Wisconsin senator since 1993. Her opponent, Boyle, holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Pepperdine University. He has served 10 years with the U.S. Marine Corps, completing a nine-month tour in Iraq and Kuwait last August and has not previously held office.
Two of the four panelists are representatives from campus newspapers. Shelley Janke is from the Leader and Brian Resop is from the UWM Post. The other two panelists will be Mary Snowden of Panthervision and Christopher Heimerman of Panthercast, the UWM television and radio stations located on campus. The debate will air live on Panthervision Channel 3 and will also air the week prior to the election on Monday, Oct. 25 and Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 26 and Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. The debate guidelines and format are taken from the League of Women Voters. The debate will be approximately one hour in length.
"We are hoping the debate will reach UWM students and staff and help make their decision a little easier for which candidate to vote for," said Justin Nies, president of SPJ. "I am excited to see the impact of the debate, since many students donŐt vote because they aren't familiar with each candidate's stance on important issues."
