UWM Broadcast Club
By Josh Rosenberg
Thanks to a number of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students and Journalism and Mass Communications senior lecturer Mark Zoromski, broadcasting is alive and well at UWM. The new campus TV station, which started last semester, is called “Paws TV 3.”
The UWM Broadcast Club officially began last year when UWM students Cassandra Gauthier, Sarah Scarpace, Elizabeth Ullenberg, Tim Muma, founded it. Zoromski worked as an adviser to the students.
The broadcasting club formed a partnership with John Grozik, director of instructional media services. Grosik was the adviser to the broadcasting club at Marquette University for 13 years. The club is allowed to use the I&MT television studio located in Cunningham Hall every Friday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Grozik’s trained professional staff oversees the production while the students’ produce their own shows.
The club has already produced 13 half-hour shows. The three different types of shows are “Panther Prowl,” which is a sports show focusing on UWM sports. Past guests of “The Prowl,” have been Men’s Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl, Women’s Basketball Coach Sandy Botham, and Horizon League MVP Maria Viall. “The Prowl,” is on every other week. Taping on the opposite week of the sports show is “Panther Pause,” a news show that focuses on problems and events taking place in and around UWM. “Panther Pause,” was lucky enough to get an interview with newly hired UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago.
While “Panther Prowl,” and “Panther Pause,” are taped every other week, “Student Showcase,” is taped every week. “Student Showcase” is a great way for UWM students who are doing great things to share them with the University. The “Student Showcase,” has been filled with student documentaries and award winning short films. UWM students Christopher Zahn and Andrew Rosas talked about their short films which both won Kodak film grants at the Wisconsin Film Festival.
While the club's initial run during the spring semester is viewed as a pilot program, everyone involved hope that it will continue. The club, funded by the UWM Student Association, plans to do fund-raising. The Broadcast Club also received a grant from the Wisconsin Broadcast Association through Zoromski's efforts.
The programs produced by “Paws TV 3,” can be seen on channel 3 in the dorms, in all UWM classrooms, and the Union.
Besides the studio broadcasts the club is also involved in Internet broadcasts of UWM sporting events. The kick-off for this new outlet will be May 1 at 5 p.m. The Panthers Baseball team will face Detroit at Miller Park. The broadcast can be heard through a link at the clubs Web site (www.pawstv3.com).
Membership is open to all registered UWM students. Broadcasting opportunities are running out for this semester, the last broadcast will be on May 7. The club has not heard the final word about getting picked up again for next year. If the Broadcasting Club is back anyone interested in journalism should visit the club’s Web site (www.pawstv3.com) to find out more about membership and the exciting opportunities.
